Casualties of war often take different forms – this current chaos has already seen the continued oppression around the world thrown over the shoulder, the ‘Make Poverty History’ campaign put on the back burner and millions of people facing famine and starvation.

You can now add a few more things to that list.

President Musharraf, who is anything but ‘Musharraf’, who knows as much about Islam as George Bush does – hold on, no sorry that’s an insult to Bush isn’t it – actually about as much as Irshad Man-in-disguise and Fred Singh know about Islam (which isn’t very much of course) has just gone and rammed another nail in the coffin. And yes I know that was a huge, insulting and emotive sentence but that’s because now it’s personal.

By banning all foreign students from Pakistani Madâris (‘Islamic’ schools), he is well on his way to completing the Neo-Cons’ ultimate aim which is to destroy the fundamental pillars of our Deen one by one – in this case, talab al-‘ilm or the ‘seeking of sacred divine knowledge’.

Personally this is another blow because I have already sourced a nice madrasah near my home in Swat, in the NWFP for my eldest lad Eesa. With Musharraf really putting the pressure on, particularly on dual-nationality holders like us, then we’re rapidly running out of options.

This trend of shutting down all avenues to learn Shari’ah in the traditional way in Muslim countries is particularly worrying. A few countries that I have been to myself to learn are now almost no-go areas. For example, the biggest casualty will be Pakistan due to the cheap cost and the total convenience for many Pakistani families in the UK. Another huge casualty is Mauritania which is now virtually impossible to learn in. Even when I was there many years back, they were starting to arrest and detain all foreign students; it has got much worse since then, to the extent that they have now started locking up their most famous scholars and ambassadors such as Shakyh Muhammad Hasan Dadaw et al. Absolute disaster.

Egypt isn’t much better, many teachers being too frightened to teach foreigners anything other than Arabic and tajweed. Saudi, Syria, Jordan and other places are rapidly falling by the wayside under American pressure – all part of the Satanic plan of destroying our sources of knowledge.

As for those that respond, “This is better for us to develop ‘home-grown’ Islamic schools” then forgive my cynicism. That’s a load of bakwas if I ever heard.

Seeking knowledge is a divine act of ‘ibadah. It has an intention, it has difficulties, Sunan, blessings, and everything else one would expect from an act of worship. Environment obviously plays a huge role – not to say that we don’t have scholars and teachers in the West and in the UK but rather if we are not going to let any more scholars in, and only rely on what we have here as resources then the only kind of scholars we’ll produce here are those on the style of modernist secular ‘Islamic moderates’. Fantastic.

It’s helpful to know that the early Salaf would not consider a man’s knowledge to be complete if they had not travelled in search of it. There are many reasons for this and of course there are exceptions (Imam Malik et al) but these current policies that people are passing now are nothing but a catastrophe for the authentic learning of our Deen.

I am sure that we’ll still be able to string a few people together to make a functional Imam position work – but where will the ‘ulema and fuqaha come from?

And whilst I’m at it, equally serious is the dissolving pillar of Jihad - the one word which has now more so than ever come under such attack as a principle and concept that it is only by the skin of our teeth that we are still holding on to such an important tool in the fight against oppression. It has been buried as has the legitimate use of istishadiyyah by those such as the Palestinians, amongst the current rhetoric of the ‘War on Terror’ as well as our own problem of fanatical extremism and deviant ideologies.

Jihad in all its forms as well as seeking sacred knowledge need to be defended today as another one of our priorities; just where do we start??

Also, in the middle of writing this comment the most ajeeb thing has just happened. In all my working life, I have never faced the scenario described a few posts ago as having to sell something questionable such as a bacon sandwich etc.

So what happened exactly 5 minutes ago?

Yep – Bacon and Egg flamin’ sandwich innit!

The girl sees me at the counter and asks the usual ‘Can I pay for this here’ bakwas. I gave it my usual (totally coerced) ‘Yeah no problems’ bakwas and we decide to play out the normal rubbish where I seethe away while she looks on in triumphant victory. You know the score.

Anyway, to my absolute HORROR, I look at the sandwich and read ‘Egg and Bacon’ and my heart just pure skips a beat! So I look at her and say, ‘Err, you know something, I don’t think this Pharmacy till can process sandwiches.’

‘That’s strange. It was fine yesterday, and every other day I come here to get a sandwich.’

‘Oh.’

Anyway, being my usual self, I bogged here straight in the eye and told her, ‘Sorry but not today its not. Try the bottom till. Ta.’

:-)

Finally, remember if you haven’t already heard that all lessons today are cancelled. Our beloved Shaykh Kehlan (hafidhahullah) is currently in hospital to sort out a few ongoing problems but everything will be fine insha’Allah by the end of the weekend. Do not forget him in your Du’aa.

Look at this for what is described as "A rare glimpse of the man behind the leader"...

I noted with interest his hobbies, and favourite music and artistes...not really what you would expect of someone leading a country named the ISLAMIC REPUBLIC of Pakistan.

Assalamaleikum Wa Rahmatulah

Little bit confused here - how can they ban dual nationality holders (or holders of Pakistan Origin Card for that matter)?

If they stop the maderassahs registering ppl without a NIC card - then fine, but the majority of madrasahs there haven't even registered with the government.

The whole point was that it was to do with stopping ppl getting visas - POC & dual nationals can be definition reside in Pakistan permanently and have visa free access.

So let us take the scenario that someone goes to Pakistan, he has either dual nationality or a POC card, he can legally stay as long as he wants in the first place (the POC advantage being he is NOT a Pakistani National - and can thus get British Consular assistance if required) - so what are they going to do? Stop the madrasahs offering him visa support!?!?

It will affect ppl who have no right
to visit Pakistan otherwise - but I can't see how it will affect dual nationals or POC holders.

I think Abu Eesa you are getting all hot under the collar for nothing, if you forgive the liberty with your collar ;-)

I believe this is usual rhetoric from Musharraf, to pacify the Western diplomats and TV channels. However, Alhamdolillah, his bark is often always much worse than his bite. As akh Anonymous pointed out above, there is no legal way they can stop those with dual nationalities or POCs from entering the land of the pure, nor can they realistically check the lists of the hundreds of thousands of students at each of the thousands of Madaris. This only affects you if your Madrassa has to support your visa application - dual nationalities don't need to worry about that.

I agree that this ruling, if properly implemented, will affect all those who are not of Pakistani origin, and will further curtail their options for seeking 'Ilm. As such, it is a tragedy, and one more step towards the complete eradication of Islamic 'Ilm, which has to be the neo-cons real aim in all this. May Allah open other doors for them where one has closed.

As for Mushy's musical tastes..LOL. If this was the worse critique of the 55 odd (and some very odd) Kings, Presidents and PMs ruling over Muslim lands, that we were not happy with their taste in music, then we would have been in good hands indeed! A trivial issue in the scheme of things, don't we think?

At a rough and random (and completely unscientific) guess, probably 99% of Muslims all over the world, and in Pakistan, either wrongly believe Music is halal, or listen to it anyway out of weakness. Hence not much point in castigating the self-styled Generalissimo ruling over the self-styled Islamic Republic of Pakistan for something that is widespread amongst the people, even amongst those who are much better acquainted with Islam and much more serious in implementing its edicts than the General seems to be.

Finally, and most importantly, agree with TT on this being a great benefit of the blog. We hear about the Shaykh's health, and can make du'a for him wherever we are. May Allah cure him and bless his illness as a purification for him, ameen.

Perhaps the sister is trying to point out that this leader is publicly admitting to a sin (and not his musical tastes), rather than trying to hide his sins. Yet at the same time, he is bowing down to Western pressures and preventing the seeking of knowledge.

we need some serious Ribaat to protect the action of seeking knowledge.. if the very heart of the deen is now certainly being close to execution... surely Ribaat is necessary and not the one where we sit in a masjid rocking our heads back and forth?

btw anyone went to the 'Salafi' talk in bham about the evils of terrorism? i saw their flier in friday's Guardian!

As news from Pakistan seems to be 'flavour of the weekend', I will add some snippets:

The ruling PML party chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain says he will see to it that foreign seminarians keep coming to Pakistan.

The opposition PMLN leader Raja Zafarul Haq has condemned the ban on foreign students.

Not to be outdone, the federal interior minister, Aftab Khan Sherpao, has already pried open a crack in General Musharraf’s proclaimed policy by saying that he will expel foreigners only after "investigation"

As I said earlier... the reality is generally quite different from the General's rhetoric when being interviewed by the Western media.

Let us take this moment to reflect upon the demise of our beloved leader: the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, the Upholder of Islam, the Reviver of the pure Salafi way.

The sadness that his death brings reminds of a poem. A poem that I still remember the words to:-

Ding Dong! The Witch is dead. Which old Witch? The Wicked Witch!
Ding Dong! The Wicked Witch is dead.
Wake up - sleepy head, rub your eyes, get out of bed.
Wake up, the Wicked Witch is dead. She's gone where the goblins go,
Below - below - below. Yo-ho, let's open up and sing and ring the bells out.

[taken from the Wizard of Oz movie]

Let us pray and hope that we do not tread the same path in these testing times. Ameen.

On a serious note Mushys decision to ban foreign students will probably have a direct affect on me as I was about to go to Pakistan to study. I had applied to a University in karachi recently so I don't know if it will affect me. I dont have a dual nationality cos im not Pakistani so no help there. It's been my wish to go and study abroad for sometime but it seems like all the doors have closed for me at this point. If anyone has any ideas where i can go or what i can do your help wud be appreciated

Haroon, I think the "ban" only applies to those studying at madaris, not to applicants to the universities and colleges. Hence Karachi University or the International Islamic University etc would not be affected, as far as I can tell.
